A major benefit of locating a business
within Cumbria is the exceptional
quality of life afforded by this
unique and beautiful region.
Leisure Activities
& Amenities
At the heart of Cumbria, the Lake
District is the most popular rural
destination for tourists in England.
In fact, tourism brings over £400
million annually into the area.
This wealth and the facilities required
to cater for tourists have led to
the highest quality and choice of
leisure activities and amenities.
The area also has a long association
with poets, writers and painters
and this famous tradition continues
with a rich variety of theatres,
art galleries, museums and cinemas
throughout the county.
Cumbria offers just about every
leisure pursuit imaginable, including
outdoor activities of all kinds,
on the hills and on the water. There
are sports and leisure centres throughout
the region and many hotels are equipped
with indoor leisure clubs for use
by non-residents.
Shopping in Cumbria is a well-served
pastime with a wide range of specialist
retailers, modern centres and factory
outlets.

Around the
Region
Cumbria is many regions in one.
The National Park with its sixteen
lakes, covers just under half the
county. In the north is the historic
Border City of Carlisle and Hadrian's
Wall - a World Heritage Site.
To the south and east of Carlisle
is the District of Eden with its
tranquil valley and market town
of Penrith. Further east is the
wild open moors of the North Pennines,
an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
South-west of Penrith is the North
Lakes area with Lake Ullswater.
The Western Lakes and Coast is an
area of quiet lakes and remote fells
with the coastal towns of Maryport,
Workington and Whitehaven providing
a fascinating heritage and modern
amenities.
The Lake District Peninsulas are
in the south of the County and feature
a mild climate and a fascinating
wealth of tourist and leisure attractions.
South Lakeland includes many well-recognised
tourist destinations, Keswick-on-Derwentwater,
Ambleside, Lake Windermere and Coniston
Water, along with Kendal in the
south of the area, a busy shopping
and commercial centre.
Studies Say
Cumbria is Best
According to a recent survey, conducted
by Strathclyde University's Quality
of Life Research Group, Kendal in
South Lakeland was rated as the
best town in England in terms of
the quality of life enjoyed by residents.
The town and much of Cumbria scored
highly after the group studied factors
such as employment levels, education
services, healthcare, shopping facilities,
crime levels and pollution.
'The loveliest
spot that man hath ever found'
'
This was how Wordsworth described
the Lake District. The dramatic
and richly varied scenery has inspired
poets and continues to inspire people.
The sense of space and freedom,
the enviable quality of life, is
enjoyed by all who live and work
here.
